yup you can do that :D

you are obviously more into the bass as a creative extension of what you feel. Which puts you ahead in the ‘game’. Technical bassists may be able to explain all kinds of theory and execute it perfectly. It is like the journalist who gets paid to cover story after story as opposed to the person who FEELS; writes a poem that ONLY could have come from them. I mix technical learning with just letting go and feeling something. I want to be able to read and score, BUT I don’t want to rely on that.

    Thankyou for your understanding. *smiles*

And you will sound…BAAAD haha thats awesome, totally agree there

Also, I totally agree with you on that whole scales idea, I have never had lessons either and i find it best to learn yourself (IMO) I teach myself through playing songs I love listening to (started with muse, my favourite band of course!)

Ha! yea, i’ve been completely hypocritical though, and did a lesson on the major scale since this vid was done! But, I kinda figured it would be a great warm-up, and could teach people where the notes are on the board, which is important. Thats all for me, though. I’m definatly a jammer and an ear player. I much prefer “feel” than academics. Of course, we are all heading in the same direction, just using on different paths to get there…

thanks a lot for you video, its refreshing to hear and see someone who knows and likes to play the bass talking about fundamentals, people tend to forget the reason why you should play the bass.

Thanks for putting these up. I just started with bass. I was getting frustrated cause I wanted lessons and couldn’t afford it. I felt like giving up until I decided to check this place and saw your videos.

Hey, thank you so much for posting the lessons! I have the problem of finding anyone around me playing the bass, so this is really helpful! :-)

BUT I would also recommend learning at least SOME music theorie- sounds awefully boring, but my experience in playing with other people (guitar/violin) is, that having some knowledge about cords, scales (major/minor) is really helpfull or even needed!
Well, I guess it workes for everyone different :-)
    THX again

I’m having trouble trying to figure out how to properly mute strings, and how to avoid making noise when I move my thumb off the “anchor string” so to speak. It constantly sounds whenever I try moving my thumb.

I also don’t like the reduced tone I get trying to mute the strings with my left hand on the neck and playing an open string, unless this muted sound is what I am supposed to get when doing this. Advice?

    Thanks.

  21. duillana says:

  22. mistressKC says:

thanks for putting up these videos. They’re so helpful. I felt really awkward playing the bass because it feels really big and heavy to me, but we needed a bassist after our first bassist went to the navy and then our other one moved back to Vegas, so I had to learn. So again, thanks for the tutorials

Nice vid man 5*s!!! I’m used to picking alot, because I play alot of thrash and I found it easier to gallop and tremolo with a pick, but I like the finger picking tone better. Ur lessons are really helpful-especially to those who really wanna learn the walking fingers. One question, how long will it take roughly to be able to alternate pick with this technique? And are you supposed to pick hard or soft?
